have you seen this....
I'm going to post all info on one page.

End Wildlife Electrocutions in Costa Rica
Also - end wildlife electrocutions in costa (pics)  WARNING - injury pics

" 80% loss of monkey populations due to electrocutions, in just the last 10 years, based on scientific studies by tico biologists.
That doesn't even account for other arboreal animal mortalities. Many of these electrocutions happen within national park boundaries.

The Costa Rican government does not think wildlife electrocutions are of much concern, and therefore, they do not insulate electrical wires or engage in the building of monkey bridges across these dangerous lines. When monkeys try crossing from canopy to canopy they use these uninsulated electrical lines and wind up being electrocuted and fried. Sometimes, a baby monkey is found, still clinging onto its dead mother's tummy, abandoned by the survivors , & unable to survive on its own.

PLEASE join this group to support the prevention of wildlife electrocutions in Costa Rica. This petition-like group will be a way for all of us to share information, pictures, and videos of any electrocuted animals found or known about, or simply if you do not agree with the occurrence of electrocutions.
We need to document the incidents, locations, witnesses, ICE post #'s, and any other available data, and POST it to this group. "

Rafael is in charge of the insulation of the hotwires. some lines have been insulated in the nosara area......
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE WILDLIFE IN COSTA RICA ???
please CALL IN YOUR PROTEST, or send an email, directly to rafael.
TELL HIM YOU NO LONGER CONSIDER COSTA RICA A TOURIST DESTINATION BECAUSE OF THE GOVT'S FAILURE TO INSULATE THE GRID.

On Jan. 23, I [Mary Lynn Perry, President of Rainsong Wildlife Sanctuary] was in Manzanillo, at Las Palmeras - Rainsong's sea turtle patrol headquarters - when a troop of about 15 congos came to the roadside up in the canopy to try to cross over to eat the beach almond leaves and cenizaro leaves on the beachside of the road. IT RAINED ELECTROCUTED CONGOS. 4 females, one with a tiny baby, and then the alpha male threw himself down to rescue the fallen females. I held one by the tail that fell in the road [her tail was so hot from the electrocution that it hurt to hold her tail ], to give her first aid and I threw myself over another that was being torn up by dogs upon falling from the live wire. The alpha male landed on a huge plank and was seriously hurt from the hard landing. It was really a crazy sad horrible tragedy. I believe that maybe one or 2 females might have survived the incident. The rest, I doubt that they survived. It can take up to 10 days for an electrocuted animal to die, even without external burns, their organs are cooked, and it's an agonizing extremely painful and slow death.

HOWLER MONKEY FACT SHEET IN RELATION TO BEING ELECTROCUTED ON THE GOVT'S UNINSULATED GRID

By Mary Perry in End Wildlife Electrocutions in Costa Rica

***the babies are usually clinging onto  their mamis' tummy when their mamis get electrocuted.many are hurt in the fall from the lines.they cling to their dead mami's , and people SOMETIMES rescue the babies,
and bring them to rainsong.since the babies suffered indirect shock, they often live longer than the adults who received a direct jolt.but the % of babies that can be saved is very very low.their organs are cooked by the electric shock [ see excerpt below from online medical journal ].they suffer a long agonizing death, it is HORRIBLE to have to HELP A BABY MONKEY DIE.NO HUMAN CAN REPLACE THEIR TRUE MOM !these poor darlings come to us electrocuted, in severe trauma, often with broken backs from their fall from the electric lines.in 2010 we were only able to save 2 lil babies, out of over 40 electrocuted MONKEYS brought to the rescue center still alive.not to mention the squirrels, AND OTHER ARBOREAL ANIMALS!
howler monkeys are LEAFARIANS, they only eat leaves and SOMETIMES green fruit [mango, guava, etc.]. FULL SUGAR FRUIT is fatal to them, because of the gasses produced by the sugar fermenting in their fragile little tummies. howler monkeys are built different from all other monkeys .they are HINDGUT FERMENTERS, more similar to a rabbit or cow , than other monkey species !!!***howler monkeys do not synthesize VIT D in their bodies, they have to absorb it from sunlight, so sunning is a SUPER IMPORTANT part of a healthy howler monkey's daily life.

(c) A severe shock can cause much more damage to the body than is visible. A person may suffer internal bleeding and destruction of tissues, nerves, and muscles. Sometimes the hidden injuries caused by electrical shock result in a delayed death". [This is taken from a medical journal.]Women start to suffer the effect at lower current levels (6-26mA), while men can sustain until a bit .(The victim stops breathing for a period of time) .current that flow through a human body - the longer it flows, the more serious the injuries. That amount of shock current will damage the hearts and other internal organs.

''YOU BURN 'EM, YOU BURY 'EM.'' I'M SICK OF BURYING DEAD MONKEYS AND OTHER ANIMALS ELECTROCUTED ON THE GOVT's UN-INSULATED GRID.I REFUSE TO BURY ANOTHER VICTIM. ALL DEAD VICTIMS ARE DELIVERED TO THE I.C.E. OFFICE.
IT IS UNBELIEVABLY CRUEL to allow the electrocuted animals to crawl away, probably condemning them to a slow agonizing death due to the gradual shutdown of cooked organs.some animals suffer up to 10 days or longer.i have saved adult monkeys from electrocution even tho they arrived in complete paralysis.to date, i have released 3 adult female howler monkeys who recovered from their electrocutions, back into local howler monkey troops. ALL FELLOW PLANETARY GUARDIANS SHOULD CARE ENOUGH TO GIVE THE ELECTROCUTION VICTIMS A CHANCE BY FOLLOWING LEGAL PROTOCOLS IN THEIR RESCUE.euthanizing them on the spot is NOT ONLY ILLEGAL,IT IS IMMORAL.

there are FEDERAL LAWS in C.R. that ALL NEW ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS must be BURIED UNDERGROUND, OR INSULATED.''GOOD LAWS THAT ARE NOT ENFORCED, FORCE US TO LIVE IN ANARCHY AND VIOLENCE.'' --- that's what i tell GOVT AGENTS when i drag their azzes out on an undercover operative to document crimes against mother nature in c.r.I.C.E.[ GOVT ELECTRIC COMPANY] , DEVELOPERS, AND PROPERTY OWNERS easily IGNORE THE INSULATION LAW. SAME AS ALL OTHER GOOD LAWS IN C.R. ... IGNORED, MAKING THEM LESS THAN USELESS.***this link below is to the WORLD BANK LOAN TO CR FOR $62 MILLION DOLLARS, with STRICT ENVIRONMENTAL CLAUSES ATTACHED , TO PROVIDE FOR THE INSULATION OF THE GOVT-OWNED GRID.THIS MONEY NEVER REACHED I.C.E.IT WENT POOF ! BULLETIN #1 - UPDATES & NEWS -MAY 2011
By Mary Perry in End Wildlife Electrocutions in Costa Rica

RAINSONG WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, COSTA RICA
According to a 2007 study by biologist Ronald Sánchez of the University of Costa Rica,
Costa Rica lost more than half its monkey population between 1995 and 2007,
(Tico Times, April 27, 2007).
A great majority of these deaths were due to electrocutions.
This study doesn't even account for other arboreal species' mortalities due to electrocution.
The Costa Rican government does not think wildlife electrocutions are of much concern, and therefore, they do not insulate electrical wires or engage in the building of monkey bridges across these dangerous lines.
When monkeys try crossing from canopy to canopy they often use these uninsulated electrical lines and are electrocuted.
Sometimes a baby monkey is found still alive, clinging onto its dead mother.
Often animals are severely injured when they fall from the high lines.
Broken backs are common.
Fallen animals are usually stunned, and while laying on the ground under the wires, many are attacked and killed by people's unrestrained dogs.

THRU THE EFFORTS OF VARIOUS CONSERVATION ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS,
a few areas of costa rica have been insulated, or monkey bridges have been installed.
but this issue URGENTLY NEEDS ATTENTION ON A NATIONAL LEVEL FROM ICE.

there are no studies being carried out currently, so we have no idea how many more animals & birds are being lost on a national level to electrocutions recently.
due to unrestrained development and disregard for protecting existing wildlife coridors by developers, the incidents of wildlife electrocution are increasing daily.
we ESTIMATE that in 2010, ONLY IN OUR AREA OF COSTA RICA, the southern tip of the peninsula de nicoya,
over 400 animals died from electrocution.
this estimate is based on animals received at the rescue center, calls to vets in the area,
and calls to ICE [ Costa Rica electric company, owned by the federal government].
the true sum is probably MUCH HIGHER, as many electrocutions occur without anyone witnessing them.

MARY LYNN PERRY, founder of RAINSONG WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, has been working closely with the COBANO ICE OFFICE, since 2005, to bring attention to the URGENT NEED FOR INSULATION OF THE GRID in our area.
PILAR SOLORZANO STELLER,  ADMINISTRATOR - COBANO ICE OFFICE,  is a fellow planetary guardian,
and  wildlife electrocutions on ICE's grid is an issue of great concern to her.
MARY @ RAINSONG & PILAR have been coordinating directly with the
ICE ENVIRONMENTAL DEPARTMENT, SAN JOSE,
to urge the immediate insulation of the grid in our area.
RAINSONG has turned in almost 2,000 signatures on petitions to the govt. urging for the insulation of the grid. [SEE BELOW...]
these petitions have sparked concern from ICE authorities in san jose.
INSULATION MATERIAL to cover 20 kilometers of lines & transformers in our area was ordered by ICE in DECEMBER 2010, in response to our continual submitting of petitions to ICE SAN JOSE.
we are still awaiting the beginning of the installation of this insulation material.
meanwhile, we CONTINUE to collect signatures on the petitions, and turn them in to ICE SAN JOSE.

Please send any pics or testimonials of wildlife electrocutions in our area [southern nicoya peninsula] to: [email protected]
WE NEED THE ICE POST #'s AT THE SITE OF THE ELECTROCUTION.

 MONKEY BRIDGES -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjxHvFxS5Mw
while we wait for ICE to install the insulation material sitting in san jose [since february 2011],
MARY & PILAR have organized the installation of 8 monkey bridges in just the past few months.
the rope used must be of natural fiber,
not nylon [synthetic rope is very slippery, juveniles and adults often slip off and are injured in the fall, or killed on the ground by people's unrestrained dogs].
the natural fiber rope has to be special-ordered by our good friend,
ERROL @ FERROCA HARDWARE, COBANO.
MARY & PILAR have also already turned into ICE SAN JOSE a complete and detailed map of our area, with the most crucial ''hot-spots'' marked, and all other priority areas of line to be insulated.
the monkey bridges are being installed in response to the urgent need to make safe the wildlife crossings in our area IMMEDIATELY.
RAINSONG [MARY LYNN PERRY] paid for several of the bridges & rainsong sponsors funded several others, - ALL NATURAL FIBER ROPE.
ICE COBANO has donated several bridges of nylon rope.
BRIDGES INSTALLED TO DATE :
3 - MONTEZUMA [ in front of HOTEL AMOR DE MAR, & MONTEZUMA BUTTERFLY GARDENS]
2 - MALPAIS
1 - TAMBOR
2 - MANZANILLO

DONATIONS - any FELLOW PLANETARY GUARDIAN who would like to help us save local wildlife from electrocution can make a donation towards the purchase of more natural fiber rope for more bridges.
donations should be given DIRECTLY TO PILAR AT THE COBANO ICE OFFICE.
ERROL @ FERROCA gives MARY & PILAR a very gracious and generous discount on the cost of the rope.
so all donations towards future monkey bridges should go directly thru PILAR AT ICE COBANO during office hours.

to support the prevention of wildlife electrocutions in Costa Rica.
We need to document the incidents, locations, witnesses, ICE post #'s ,species of the vicitms.

We have a petition to collect signatures to convince the govt to insulate the electric grid ...

ENGLISH PETITION: I feel strongly that the Costa Rican Government should immediately insulate all electric lines and transformers, in order to stop the electrocution of Costa Rica's precious wildlife. This is an issue that needs urgent attention from the Costa Rican government. The beautiful wilderness and wildlife of Costa Rica should be protected for all residents of mother earth, and for all future generations.

ANYONE CAN PRINT OUT THE ABOVE TEXT FOR THE PETITIONS
[be sure to include both english AND spanish text] ,
then COLLECT SIGNATURES from concerned people WHEREVER YOU ARE.
then scan the signed petitions and send them to [email protected]
it is necessary that persons write their name, email address, and home country.
no other identification is necessary on the petitions.

RESCUING ELECTROCUTED WILDLIFE -
a recent incident [april 12,2011] sparked controversy regarding the rescue of electrocuted animals.
APRIL 12 - 3 howler monkeys electrocuted in front of SUPER HACIENDA, in santa teresa.
SADLY, local people refused to cooperate with rainsong's vet in the rescue of these stunned electrocution victims.
instead, they called another vet to come to the site to euthanize the animals on the spot.
THIS IS ILLEGAL and IMMORAL .  !!!
all electrocuted wildlife found STILL BREATHING should be put in a box and rushed IMMEDIATELY to rainsong's vet -
DVM DEANNE SHARER, tel #s - 2642 0305 / cell #8837 8244
these VICTIMS deserve a chance to recover from their shock.
euthanizing them on the spot is not giving them a chance.
the vet who went to euthanize the monkeys is not qualified to assess electrocution victims,
he is a dog & cat vet, and he has NO EXPERIENCE WITH SAVING ELECTROCUTION VICTIMS.
ELECTROCUTION VICTIMS should be under observation by a COMPASSIONATE vet for at least 24 hours,
with their hearts being monitored regularly, and pain meds applied.
if they survive the first 24 hours, then they are sent to a rescue center for their recuperation period before being released into their natural habitat, usually back into their family troop.
IT IS UNBELIEVABLY CRUEL to allow the animal to crawl away, possibly condemning it to a slow agonizing death due to the gradual shutdown of cooked organs.
i have saved adult monkeys from electrocution even tho they arrived at the rescue center in complete paralysis.
to date, i have released 3 adult female howler monkeys who recovered from their electrocution.
ALL FELLOW PLANETARY GUARDIANS SHOULD CARE ENOUGH TO GIVE THE ELECTROCUTION VICTIMS A CHANCE BY FOLLOWING LEGAL PROTOCOLS IN THEIR RESCUE.
euthanizing them on the spot is NOT ONLY ILLEGAL,
IT IS IMMORAL.
SHAME ON YOU ALL ! you know who you are, and charges have been filed !
